Hurricane? What would happen if fire were applied to a hurricane? There are no limits/restrictions/restraints,etc. on how much fire.
How long does a hurricane usually last? I'm planning a trip to NOLA next week, and of course, there's a chance of a hurricane. If Gustav does make landfall this weekend, how long will it be before residents are back in New Orleans? We are supposed to arrive on Wednesday. Will it be safe or even habitable by then? Living in the Midwest, I have no idea how long or how damaging a hurricane can be, except for the catastrophic.
How can I make a hurricane resistant house with limited materials? For school I have to make a hurricane resistant house out of 2 pieces of construction paper and 4 straws. Does anybody have any ideas on a design for a house or how to use the straws correctly to support the house so the house doesn't fall apart? (The "hurricane" will be a leaf blower) Thank you!
Is a vacation to Jamaica in hurricane season too dangerous? I'm planning a vacation for my mom and I. We're going to Jamaica the first week of September 2009. Is this too risky a move, in reference to hurricane season? My mom's a little nervous about getting stuck on the island with a hurricane.

What makes the hurricane season from the June to November? I mean do the hurricanes just say okay, it's June I'm gonna start now, and when November comes, it says I'm gonna stop now. How do we know the exact month that a hurricane could pop up and how do we know the exact month that it stops? Who's to say we couldn't have a hurricane in December?
What are some important hurricane supplies when you have a baby? My brother and sister inlaw aren't too bright. With Tropical Storm Fay possibly being a Hurricane by the time it hits my family my mom is worried they won't be properly prepared. What are some additional supplies one must have on hand for a baby? Anything special you wouldn't necessarily stock up on for just older kids/adults? Also the baby gets congested very easily, needs a dehumidifier in his room at night....how can they keep him feeling well with no air conditioning if power is lost?
What was the last hurricane to hit the NYC area? I don't mean a storm that was a hurricane at some point. I want a hurricane that arrived in the area as a hurricane. Both of you are wrong. I know of Hurricane Gloria which hit in 1985. I was thinking a bit more recent though.
How can I reattach a hurricane bolt anchor that has come out of my concrete block wall? I moved into a new concrete block and stucco house that has permanent anchors around the windows for bolting on the hurricane shutters (metal panels). Some of the screw-in anchors have come out. Can I plug the holes with cement and drill a new hole to reattach the anchors? Or is there a better fix? What type of cement or substance should I use to plug the holes?
What are the risk and challenges one must face when riding out a hurricane? When a hurricane hits any coastal city in the United States, it is advised either mandatory or voluntarily to evacuate from where you are located. Throughout history of major hurricanes such as Hurricane Andrew (1992), Hugo (1989), Opal (1995) and Katrina (2005), many residents of coastal cities stayed even though they were told to leave. What are the risk and challenges one must face when riding out a hurricane?
Hurricane Preparation: How many gallons of water should one put away? I went to the store today, and people were hovering over the bottled water. How much per person is adviced to purchase should a hurricane hit your area? I saw one family with about three kids purchase about 3 gallons. I saw an elderly man, purchase a whole basketful, probably about 20 gallons. Should there be a limit on how many a person can purchase if they wait till the last minute to purchase?
What happens if a hurricane collides into a cold front? Won't this cause the warm air in the hurricane to be pushed out and soon dissipate? Just curious. Cuz it's in the 30's here at night, but 70's during the day. There is a hurricane developing South East heading my way. Ahh see I'm so smart, I just wanted to see if my thoughts were right. Thanks all!
Are impact resistant windows really adequate enough protection in a hurricane? Asking for experienced answers - I live in Palm Beach Gardens in an apartment complex on the second floor.. I have a sliding glass door and numerous large windows.. just curious that if a hurricane does hit, do I need to take further precautions, or would my impact glass suffice (new to the area, will be first hurricane haha) Thanks! i forgot to add this if it matters.. my complex is only about 4 years old...
How do I keep my house safe during this years hurricane season? We got hit by hurricane Rita almost 2 years ago and we still have a blue tarp on our roof. We are renting and the owner of the house didn't have insurance on the house so we stll have a blue tarp covering it. I'm worried about this years hurricane season. I can't afford to move and I'm trying my best to safe up to get it fixed but in the meantime, how do I keep my house safe? No jokes please. I'm still trying to get mold spores out of the house. Sorry to hear about all of that. FEMA said we had significant damage but said they couldn't help us because I forgot to include my middle name when I signed my name during the inspection of my house. They caontacted me 8 months after the hurricane, after is started raining in our house and leaks were everywhere and then they mentioned they could have helped us but I left out my middle name on my signature. I had to show proof who I was about 3 times and finally I got it straight but then I recieved a letter in the mail from FEMA saying I missed the deadline and they couldn't help us fix the roof. So now I am saving up to have it fixed.

Someone help me out no one knows?
What does water exactly do inside a hurricane? I want to get an idea about water activity inside an hurricane. How is it mounted in an eye of a hurricane? I thought the water would kind of drain inwards inside the eye, like a whirlpool - like in a sink filled in water and you unclog it and drain the water away and you could see a tiny whirlpool. But other sources say the water is mounted inside the eye of a hurricane? How is it mounted..in what manner? Like a fountain? An answer with interactive source would be very much appreciated.
Is there such thing as a hurricane proof home? I want to live in Clearwater, Florida one day and just don't want a hurricane to destroy my house. So is there such thing? And if there is, will I still need to evacuate when the hurricane comes?

My friend and i are wanting to get together with our church and our friends church to do an Operation Christmas for the town of Pearlington, Mississippi, and if you didnt know, Pearlington was only a couple of miles away from the eye of Hurricane Katrina. How do I get my bank to reduce my hurricane insurance requirements? My bank, Wachovia, is making me pay for hurricane insurance on the replacement value of my home instead of the amount of money I owe on the mortgage. Last year they tried the same thing but were willing to just insure the mortgage amount, This year I was told the amount would be added to my mortgage for the replacement value. This is over 3 times the mortgage amount. I refused but was told I could not. What can I do?
Is there a Florida tree that is fast growing yet hurricane safe? I need to replace diseased trees with one that is fast growing, for shade, but is safe during hurricane winds. Palm trees give little to no shade and crape myrtles don't get very big here in central Florida. I'm looking for something to block the afternoon sun from heating up my backyard, lanai and house. I had 3 pine trees there, and they blocked the afternoon sun, but they were diseased and had to be removed.
Why do people still refuse to heed hurricane warnings only to suffer in the end? Several fires were burning untended across Houston and 911 operators received about 1,250 calls in 24 hours, said Frank Michel, spokesman for Houston Mayor Bill White. I don't get it. I really don't. Houston and Galveston residents were repeatedly told about the dangers of Hurricane Ike, and still some choose to stay?! ( o _ 0 ) I'm not trying to sound mean. I've been through super typhoons, hurricanes, and earth quakes.
I'm getting hurricane shutters, but what should I do to protect my skylights? I live in south florida and I need to have ALL window openings protected in case of a hurricane, which includes skylights (or I dont get my insurance premium reduced). I am getting shutters for all my other windows and sliding doors, What can I do with my skylights? I doubt, although I am unsure, that they are impact glass currently. Help!
How does the hurricane machine work? It looks like President Obama found George Bush's hurricane machine - you know, the one he used to send Katrina to hurt all those poor black people in New Orleans - and has now used it to send Hurricane Bill to hurt the white people in New England. Does it actually make the hurricanes or just attract them like a magnet? And if the latter why did President Obama take such a risk bringing it to Martha's Vinyard himself?
Does the increase in hurricane activity make it riskier to buy oceanfront property? I'm considering buying some beachfront property in the mid-atlantic region. It certainly seems that there is a definite trend toward more hurricane activity. Beach erosion alone would be a major concern. Its been our dream to own a modest home on the beach. It would be our only home. I wonder if I wouldn't be taking a higher risk considering the evidence that the storms are escalating in number and strength. Any comments? Thanks.
What happens to marine animals and other sealife during a hurricane? I've seen what a hurricane can do to land and people, its devastating. But I have always wondered, what happens to the life in the sea? Is the hurricane just as bad at sea? What are the effects on the sea and oceans when hurricanes, typhoons or monsoons occur? I hope I get some good answers...:)
Just How Dangerous IS a Hurricane anyway? I know it sounds silly to ask. But just how dangerous IS a Hurricane anyway? This is my first hurricane season in south Texas, and TS(Hurricane Dolly by Tuesday morning) Dolly is headed straight for Brownsville--which isn't THAT far from me. How dangerous is this going to be? (and yes, I'm stocked with important supplies, water, batteries for radio, canned food, etc...) Thank you for all your responses. I now have to decide between the 2 of the best responses though.
What impact would a large Hurricane or two have on the already high gas prices? I was just sitting here thinking about the high gas prices and the future. I drive a daily route that somedays consists of 200+ miles round trip by the time I get back home. Its my job and im glad to have one. I have cut, trimmed and am doing everything I can to counter the high gas prices.Im now just looking down the road a bit and was wondering, "what impact would a large Hurricane or two, say a cat 4 or 5 in the Gulf do to the already high prices at the pump?"
