what is the difference between horizontal axis and vertical axis wind machines?

1. Horizontal axis: blades look like airplane propellers Vertical axis: blades look like ribbons
2. Yes... One of them is vertical...(up and down orientation) And the other one is horizontal...(sideways left & right orientation) (Now skipping merrily merrily away, all happy that I knew the answer to this question...)
3. A vertical axis machine like the Savonius rotor is omn-directional and does not need to be steered.
