When was the last time a major Hurricane hit Massachusetts or New England?

Public Comments

  1. The last hurricane to make landfall in New England was Hurricane Bob during the 1991 Atlantic hurricane season: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hurricane_Bob The 1938 storm produced wind gusts to category 4 & 5 strength in exposed areas of southern Rhode Island and coastal Massachusetts west of Buzzards Bay and notably at Blue Hill in Milton, Massachusetts. A Nor'easter is a large mid-latitude cyclone that forms off the eastern coasts of Atlantic Canada and the United States. These will usually form between November and March and can cause damage similar to that of tropical cyclones. Not to be confused with Warm core tropical cyclones, these systems will exhibit Extratropical Characteristics including having a Cold core. One or more of these storms will hit New England during an average winter.
  2. if you move to south florida you will no longer worry about such things!! Cheers!! Mike
  3. im not really sure but I do know that tornadoes can happen anywhere....with a cold front and a warm front clashing together a tornado is likely anywhere....take it from me I used to live in cincinnati ohio and i was in 7 tornadoes
  4. 1991 - Hurricane Bob was the last memorable hurricane. I also remember Gloria in the 80's and then there was Donna in the 60's, Carol and something else in the 50's, and the 1938 hurricane was devastating, nicknamed the Long Island Express. Ironically, New England is somewhat due for a direct hit because we have been skirted for a long time. I hope we don't get hit anytime in the near future but unfortunately history has a way of repeating itself.
