What is the material people use to make kites?

I had a dream that I had angel wings last night, and it was so awesome that I want to make some...at least try. What material do they use to make kites? I'm going to try something using parts of kites. Don't give me some of that "you cant make wings" stuff. I said I was gonna try and I doubt I'm going to make it either.

1. Plastic if they're cheap, nylon if they're not.
2. Mylar and balsa dowels if you want to go for the gold.
3. Kites can be made of either plastic tarp or paper. The dowels can be made of either wood or plastic straws.
